Depictions of Grendel

We have talked in class about how we create images of what we read in our heads. I love reading books, and I love watching movies, but many times I am disappointed in movies made from books that I have read. The reason for this dissappointment is the manner in which the director creates characters that I have already created in my head. I realize it is an impossible task, but I cannot help it. Below you will see some different depictions of Grendel. I'd like you to look at the pictures and vote on your favorite one. In your comment, I would like you to give at least one reason that explains why you liked the particular depiction.

I choose picture number two because it showed Grendel as past human part animal which I thought of him as since he eats people. Also, it is a very scary character which I expected him to be

I choose picture one because I see Grendel as a huge monster with a lot of strength. He picks up 30 men at one point so he must be really big and strong. I also see him being very angry and scary looking.

I liked picture number one because its very detailed and you can see how big he is or get an idea. I didnt expect him to look like that though but he is ugly and looks weird.

i liked picture 1 but picture 2 is the one i choose because it showed him part human and part beast like we said in class. maybe if he had huge muscles like picture one had because he picked up 30 men and all so i just thought of him as half human and half beast but very big and muscular.

I liked picture number 5. Since the beginning, i have pictures Grendel to be completely scary and picture 5 reminds me of that. I like how picture 1 shows his strength though. I didnt really like 2 because he doesnt look strong enough to be able to fight so many men.

The first picture resembles, my version of Grendel the most, not 100% but it came closer than any of the other pictures. I always thought of him being green, and muscular and the first picture matches that image more than the others.

I chose the third picture because i picture Grendel as more of a man than a monster. I think he started out as a man and mutated into some type of demon like creature.I also picked this one because its the most believable, to me.

I thought picture 1 described Grendel the most because it shows how big and mighty he is, which Grendel is in the story because he kills people and eats them. Also, that is the closest to what I imagine Grendel looking like while reading Boewulf.

I chose picture number 1 because i picture Grendel as having a lot of strength and the picture shows how strong Grendel really is. He is also more monster than he is man so picture 1 fits him well.

Max Barden said...

I choose picture 1 because it has the closest resemblance to the image that I already had in my head. Also, it shows Grendel as very powerful and strong which both describe him well.

nathalie said...

I like the first picture because in my mind i imagine Grendal as a large beast that has green skin and large teeth. The monster in the first picture is pretty close to what i see in my head when I read Beowulf.

Zac Harford said...

The first picture is the best depiction of Grendel, although none of them are anything like I pictured him in my head. One of the features I imagined Grendel to have is brute strength, and this picture shows that the best. The reason I like the first picture is because it is the most representative of a powerful monster that is capable of the things Grendel did.

Francie Kanis said...

I choose picture number one because i see Grendel as a large monster who's strength dominates over any other strength, like him picking up 30 people and killing them all at one time.I see him being very angry at the world and looking like he is always craving human blood.

I choose picture number two because I saw Grendel as sorta shy but still had a scary look to him. I believe picture two shows that more then the others. Grendel comes off as bad but still a little depressed and shy .

I choose picture number one because that monster looks like he is very angry and in a lot of pain, and that is how Grendel is. He is also very big and scary, and looks like he would be ready to eat anyone.

I would have to choose picture number one because it shows his immense size and stregnth but i thought number two might have come close as well.

Taryn Wellborn said...

I like picture number 1 becuase it is very detailed and you can see how big Grendel is. I imagined him as huge and strong just like the picture.

kristy y said...

I would choose picture 4 because it is the closest resemblance to what I saw Grendel as.

Davis M said...

I choose picture number 2 because itshows Grendel being big but mysterious. In the picture it looks as if Grendel could sneek close to Hrot but still hav the power to carry 30 men away.

Nathaniel Finney said...

I vote for picture 5. This picture represents my image of Grendel because it is large, dark, slimy, and monsterous, just how I had imagined him.

Travis Carney said...

I suppose I can't vote fairly since the first image did not display, but of the four I can see, I would say that two looks somewhat close. I imagine Grendel to be larger and have brute strength, but the eyes and hair he has in picture two look reasonable.

KaRecka said...

I choose picture number four because it showed Grendal more evil and more like of what i had in my mind, while reading the book.

Zak Kocsis said...

The image in my head is most like the first picture. I see him as a huge monster with powerful strength. Yet, I see him with more monstrous facial features.

Lyndsie 4th said...

I chose picture number five because it portrays Grendel as a dark unhuman type of a figure. This picture also shows how big he is.

samuel john peterson said...

None of the pictures really fit my image of Grendel. However i choose number 1 because it best resembles my vision. I chose number 1 because i thought the size of grendel was accurate and the red skin is also what i pictured him.

Garrett Keeling said...

I feel that the first picture best depicts Grendal. I pictured Grendal as monstrous being with humanlike features. Grendal looks as though he is human in picture 1, but just with amazing strength and size.

emily houston said...

I like picture number one because it shows him as a giant who can kill a lot of poeple at once.

caleb correll said...

I like picture number one because Grendel looks like a beast. In this picture he is huge and a lot like i imagined him. I also liked picture two because hes part human, but he doesn't look built or big enough to snatch up 30 men.

Lauren H said...

I think picture numer 1 depicts Grendel the best out of all five depictions. I think I liked one the best because it seems more medieval looking which fits with the novel better. The other four look as though they are from a sci-fi movies and they just seem too modern for the poem. I also like one because it shows part of Grendel’s personality where as the other four are just of him but don’t really speak about his personality.

I choose picture 1, because i saw Grendel as a monstrous creature. He seemed to be very big and strong since he picked up 30 men in the hall. I pictured him as a very angry creature who always wanted bloodshed.

Kayla said...

i choose picture number one because it shows Grendel very big and muscular. in the story he is said to be huge compared to anyone else, so this is why i think this picture fits.

I think picture one depicts Grendel best. Unlike some of the other ones, the monster in this picture shows the potential to pick up 30 men.

Joel Brooking said...

I choose picture 2 because thats the way he seemed to me when ever wee would read about him in the beowulf epic. i thought he would have been more beast like though with more teeth and a all around bigger jaw structure.

My mental picture doesn't relate really to any of the pictures, but if I needed to name one, I would have to say picture number 5. I don't picture Grendel as anything human and almost somewhere between the Lochness monster and the aliens in Predator almost.

The fifth picture matches most closely my image of Grendel. Grendel seems o be portrayed in Beowulf as a human-like creature, but not apearing human. In picture 5, Grendel in bipedal, and not immensly huge, allowing him to enter Hrothgar easily and silently

Unknown said...

I liked picture number two because it showed Grendel as part human and animal which is what we discussed in class. He doesn't look strong enough to pick up 30 men like number one but this is still how I pictured him.

Koty Trentman said...

I liked picture number one because it showed Grendel as a giant monster that looked unstoppable. I picture him as this huge muscular monster with incredible an incredible amount of strength.

JON AHRENS said...

I choose 3. This is because he looks really evil and mean, and he also looks like someone that would eat a bunch of people. I think I manly choose him because he was closest to what I saw as Grendal. My book was The Contender and I would give it a 8. Its very inspiring.

jake lackner said...

I thought picture number 3 matched the image of grendel I had in my head the best. Because you can really see the big claws. Also nubmber 3 looks by far the most intimidating. I read and then there were none I would give the book a 7. The book has so many characters with so many different view points. Which sometimes can lead to confusion.

Picture 1. I pictured Grendel being big, strong, and red. I also pictured him always yelling and screaming in pain. He is also wielding a weapon, which i always pictured.

keara sanson said...

I liked picture 1 because it shows that Grendels strong, and its the closest image that i imagined him looking like. Also it shows his human features.

Corrie Dignan said...

I choose picture one because that is what I imagined him to look like when I read along with the book. It also shows the detail in the picture such as his strength, how big he was and how he had somewhat human features.

craig said...

This is Craig Leugers and I chose picture number five. It really does look like what my image of Grendel would look like. The beast looks really reptilian, dark, and evil, something that you would expect to crawl out of a swamp.

I like picture number one because it shows how big and strong grendel is. iI expected him to look somewhat like that when i pictured him in my mind. I tought he would also show some human aspects as well.

This is Alex Abramovich
I liked picture number 1 because it closely resembled how I pictured Grendel. The other Grendel's are interesting but the first picture of Grendel looks more bigger, stronger, and evil. This is how I pictured him to be.

Annie said...

Picture number five would deffinatly be my choice because that is how i would picture him in my head. In the poem the described Grendel as being slimy and gross and that is exactly what number five looks like

luke said...

I pick picture number 4 because i comes close to the image that i have of Grendel. When i picture Grendel i see him with a pure evil almost devilish face, long black claws, he is strong and he is surrounded by blood and dead bodies. To me picture number 4 resembles it the best.

Ginny Shafer said...

i think number two depicts Grendel because he looks somewhat human but still monster-like. He kinda resembles the image I had in my head while I was reading.

garrett said...

I think picture number one represents Grendel the best. In the picture it shows him being big and strong, while the other pictures he looks small and weak.

Kevin Hetrick said...

I definitely think picture one is the best because its shows Grendel as being huge. I don't think that the other ones are realistic enough to go along with the story. I expected Grendel to be less human looking though.

Unknown said...

I liked the 5th picture the best because it looks like what you would expect a swamp monster to look like. He is ugly , reptile looking, and slimy.

gmancz said...

I would choose picture number one because of the massive sive and girth of Grendel. He is a big beast and I always have pictured him being a bit of an oger so it fits perfectly.

Pat Guanciale said...

I chose picture one because I always saw Grendel as being a giant who dwarfed Beowulf. Also it shows him being brutish which is what i envisioned.

Etenoever said...

I chose number one because it shows grendel tall and strong. In the story the details to me make Grendel seem tall and stong.

Katie Asbury said...

I choose picture one, I picture Grendel as a huge monster who is really strong. Although I picture Grendel more human looking than any of these pictures.

ty knab said...

I like number 3 because it is the biggest and scariest one and that's how I see grendel being.

Katie Ellis said...

The first image looks like the closest to what i pictured in my head. It resembles Grendel's strength and is also very scary looking.

Thugenberg said...

Personally, I like the first picture the best. It makes Grendel seem much more evil. His redness reminds me of Satin, which is how I think of him in the book. It seems as though Grendel is taken too lightly by some, because Beowulf has no trouble overcoming him. But, every other time Grendel had attacked no one was able to stop him.

Vince Licata said...

I choose picture number two because it shows Grendel as kinda 2 faced the human/monster side and the scary, killer side also because he killed the men in the hall that shows he is mean and yeah.... but also he is strong and giant and everything else.

Fred Walker said...

I chose picture number two because it showed Grendel and being scary looking while still looking realistic. Picture number two looks like he could sneak into Herot without waking anyone up while still being able to eat 30 men.
